The extraction column is a chemical separation equipment used for liquid-liquid extraction (solvent extraction). Its core function is to achieve efficient mass transfer through counter-current contact between two phases (usually immiscible light phase and heavy phase), thereby achieving the purpose of separation. The extraction column is a commonly used unit operation for separating liquid mixtures. It can not only extract and enrich products, but also remove some other similar substances, enabling preliminary purification of the products.

The RDC extraction column is a mechanically agitated extraction column, consisting of three sections: the upper clarification section, mixing section, and lower clarification section. The mixing section is cylindrical in shape, and its interior is divided into a series of extraction chambers by fixed ring baffles. A rotating disc is installed between two fixed ring baffles and rotates together with the agitator shaft.
During operation, the heavy phase and light phase enter the column from the top and bottom respectively, forming counter-current contact inside the column. Under the agitation of the fixed rotating discs, the dispersed phase is broken into small droplets, increasing the mass transfer area. After completion of the extraction process, the light phase and heavy phase flow out separately from the outlets at the top and bottom of the column.
1.Mechanical Agitation Enhances Mass Transfer
The RDC extraction column uses a motor to drive the central shaft, which rotates the discs at high speed. The shear force generated breaks the dispersed liquid phase into fine droplets, significantly increasing the interfacial contact area. At the same time, the liquid vortex movement is generated, improving the mass transfer coefficient.
2.Fixed Rings Suppress Back Mixing
Multiple layers of annular fixed rings are installed inside the column at certain intervals, dividing the column body into several extraction chambers. The fixed rings not only provide structural support but also restrict axial back mixing of the fluid, reducing the loss of mass transfer efficiency.
3.Continuous Counter-Current Operation
The light phase (such as organic phase) and heavy phase (such as aqueous phase) enter the column from the top and bottom respectively and contact each other in counter-current flow. The dispersed phase droplets are repeatedly dispersed and coalesced under the action of the rotary discs, completing the mass transfer process. After extraction, the two phases are separated and discharged from both ends of the column.
1.Modular Design and Easy Maintenance
The diameter of the rotary disc is smaller than the inner diameter of the fixed ring, making disassembly and assembly convenient. The column body adopts a sectional structure (upper clarification section, mixing section, and lower clarification section), simplifying maintenance procedures.
2.High-Efficiency Mass Transfer and Processing Capacity
The rotary discs enhance mixing efficiency, while the fixed rings reduce back mixing, resulting in higher mass transfer efficiency compared with traditional packed columns or screen plate columns. The equipment is suitable for large-scale continuous production with high processing capacity.
3.Energy Saving and Space Optimization
The equipment has low energy consumption, small solvent holdup, and high solvent utilization efficiency. The vertical design of the column significantly reduces the required floor space compared with traditional equipment.
4.Various Materials and Strong Adaptability
The column body and internal components can be manufactured using corrosion-resistant materials (such as 304/316 stainless steel and glass) to meet the requirements of different corrosive materials. Customized parameter designs are also available.
With its stable structure and high-efficiency mass transfer characteristics, the RDC extraction column is widely used in industries such as petrochemicals, pharmaceuticals, and environmental protection. It is particularly suitable for liquid-liquid extraction and separation systems involving high-viscosity and easily emulsified solutions.
