The generation of alcohol ether organic wastewater mainly occurs during the industrial production of isopropanol using the propylene hydration process in chemical plants. This type of wastewater contains large amounts of isopropyl ether and isopropanol. Isopropanol is a commonly used organic chemical raw material, while isopropyl ether is also an excellent solvent. Therefore, if both compounds can be extracted and separated from the wastewater for reuse, it can help enterprises reduce costs.

When performing the extraction and separation of alcohol ether organic wastewater, the centrifugal extractor adopts the solvent extraction method, which can effectively extract and separate isopropyl ether and isopropanol. The CWL-M series centrifugal extracor developed by Tiei Extraction is designed to overcome the shortcomings of traditional centrifugal extractors, consuming only 10%–30% of the power of conventional annular-type models. In addition, the CWL-M centrifugal extracor has short residence time per stage, rapid phase separation, high extraction efficiency, and significant savings in investment costs, solvent recovery and regeneration costs.

Through continuous experimental applications, the solvent extraction-distillation method has proven to be highly effective for the extraction and separation of isopropyl ether and isopropanol. Ethylene glycol can be selected as the extractant, and experimental data show that the extraction and separation performance is excellent.

Process Flow for Extraction and Separation of Alcohol Ether Organic Wastewater

1.Mixing and Extraction: The wastewater and the selected extractant are rapidly mixed in the centrifugal extractor. During this process, alcohol ether transfer from the aqueous phase to the extractant phase.

2.Centrifugal Separation: Under strong centrifugal force, the two phases separate quickly and clearly:
Extracted phase (heavy phase): Purified water with significantly reduced COD, directed to subsequent treatment.
Raffinate phase (light phase): Extractant enriched with alcohol ethers, sent to the recovery process.

3.Solvent Recovery: Through distillation, the extractant is separated from the alcohol ethers:
Recovered product: High-purity alcohol ethers, which can be reused or sold.
Recycled carrier: The extractant is cooled and returned to the extractor for reuse.

Using centrifugal extraction technology to treat alcohol ether organic wastewater perfectly aligns with the modern environmental concepts of “wastewater resource utilization” and “clean production.” It holds tremendous potential for application and widespread promotion.
