
In the process of producing high-purity lithium carbonate from lithium-containing brines, the removal of boron is a critical step. Due to the high solubility of boric acid and borate species in brine, boron is difficult to effectively remove by conventional separation methods, making it a major bottleneck limiting further improvement in lithium salt purity. Although traditional extraction processes can partially remove boron, they suffer from significant losses of isooctanol and limited separation efficiency, typically reducing the boron content only to around 50 ppm, which is insufficient to meet the requirements for high-purity lithium salt production.
Zhengzhou Tiei Extraction Technology has addressed this technical challenge by developing an innovative optimized extraction scheme based on the CWL-M centrifugal extractor. By optimizing the extractant formulation and adopting a composite system of isooctanol, 2-octanol, and kerosene, the process significantly enhances boron extraction efficiency while reducing extractant loss and viscosity. Combined with precise acidification pretreatment and alkaline neutralization recovery steps, and leveraging the highly efficient mixing and phase separation performance of the CWL-M centrifugal extractor, the system enables multistage continuous countercurrent extraction. As a result, the boron concentration in the brine can be stably reduced to below 10 ppm, providing a solid foundation for the production of high-purity lithium salts.
The CWL-M centrifugal extractor for lithium extraction from brine demonstrates significant advantages in this process. It offers high mass transfer efficiency, effectively shortening phase separation time; its fully enclosed design minimizes extractant volatilization losses; corrosion-resistant materials ensure suitability for acidic operating conditions; and the automated control system guarantees stable process operation. In addition, the process enables recycling of the extractant, and the resulting borate by-products can be valorized, delivering outstanding overall economic performance and environmental benefits.
At present, this technology has been successfully applied in multiple salt lake lithium extraction projects, validating its reliability in industrial-scale production.
